Question 13

As a white-passing latina, I have a question about representation. I understand the desire for characters who share identities with the author, but in multi-POV stories, does the publishing world frown upon POVs from characters of color whose experiences I don’t share? I have a 4 POV heist story I’m working on (think Six of Crows) and I don’t want to only have white latinas like myself, I also want to write Afro-Latina POVs, but im not sure if that’s frowned upon?

You can find this mentor, Rachel Faturoti, here!

If you do indeed believe that writing in that POV is best for that character, then I would go ahead with it, but be mindful of harmful representation. Do you know any Afro-Latinas you can ask for help with shaping that character as you write? Once you're done, I would also see if you can get a sensitivity reader/someone to check how the character is portrayed.

Thanks
